Description of the Master's Degree in European Union Law:
Over half of the rules that govern us in the different Member States of the European Union originate in the European institutions - that is, they fall within the scope of European Union law and must therefore be interpreted and applied by the national authorities in the terms defined by the order European law. The proper application of European Union law by Portuguese public administration and courts therefore depends on the provision of quality training products adapted to the needs of legal operators. The MDEUL makes it possible to understand the relations of interdependence and coordination between the Union's and the Member States' legal systems, as well as the mastery of the essential instruments of the European Union's substantive and procedural law. The distinctive mark of the MDEUL therefore corresponds to the transversality of the contents taught, since it covers both public and private law, as well as material and procedural law. It is the concern of this Course to respond to a growing need: to deepen and disseminate the legal culture of European integration, creating conditions so that, from an administrative and judicial perspective, Portuguese legal agents and operators become familiar with needs arising from the growing presence of European Union law in the daily life of our institutions and courts. For this reason, the MDEUL has recently undergone a curricular revision that has extended the deadline for the conclusion of the dissertation (which is now two semesters), as well as the reorganization of its curricular units and program content in order to adapt them to the permanent developments in European Union law.

Curricular Units (1st semester):
- Legal and Political bases of European Integration
- European Union Litigation
- European Competition Law and Internal Market
- Sanctioning, Judiciary and Law Enforcement European Union Law

Curricular Units (2nd semester):
- European Union Law and Politics I
- European Union Law and Politics II
- Seminars on the jurisdictional application of European Union Law;
- Methods of scientific work.

The curricular units of EU Law and Policy I and II are composed of modules which closely follow some of the Titles of the Treaty on the Functioning of the European Union (TFEU) which reflects policies pursued in the context of integration (Part III of the TFEU: "Policies and internal actions of the Union"). To this extent, and taking into account the impossibility of contemplating the whole of Part III, some dimensions with significant repercussions in the domestic legal orderwill be selected . The content of the program may vary annually, taking into account the relevance and timeliness of some of the European policies as defined and conducted by the Union institutions (hence the provision of a free module which may require redistribution of hours) the following topics:
- Taxation;
- Environment;
- Information technologies and digital economy;
- Contracts;
- Consumer and credit;
- Employment and social protection;
- Intellectual property;
- Commercial companies;
- Judicial cooperation in civil and commercial matters;
- Free.

The curricular unit Seminars has been particularly improved. As is well known, European Union law tends to be principally based on jurisprudence. However, in view of the theoretical intensity that the correct assimilation of Union law requires, it is understandable that in the other curricular units of the course it is not always possible to explore the jurisprudential dimension with due accuracy. Thematic seminars serve primarily to fill this gap, that is, for the student to come into contact (mainly) with the case law of the CJEU, with European Union law as it is applied by courts that are organically and functionally European. It also addresses the need to allow the contact with material contents not sufficiently contemplated in other curricular units and, in this way, to enhance the student's cognitive abilities and their research potential in areas still to be explored. Such thematic seminars to be administered are defined annually by the head of the curricular unit in order to meet training needs in respect of substantive contents of Union law not sufficiently covered by other curricular units, and may cover, as an indication, the following subjects: Finance; Contracting and public markets; Energy and green economy; Data protection; Banking market; Sports market; Transport; Health; Culture; Economic liberties; Integration and regional development; Frontiers, visas, asylum and immigration; External action of the Union, etc.

Access to higher education:
The Master's defgree provides basic training for the completion of a 3rd Cycle course (PhD) in the same scientific area, or in other areas.

Career opportunities:
The Master's Degree will enable students to: a) integrate  as senior officials of the national public administration and become competitive for the European civil service; (b) correctly implement European Union law in the daily life of national institutions and courts; (c) apply to the Centre of Judicial Studies (CEJ) by having the necessary knowledge in areas that are specifically subject to evaluation, both at the entrance and in the training phase; (d) apply European Union law in any Member State (and even internationally) by taking advantage of the free movement; (e) manage the theories and instruments of European Union law in any context of regional integration. The teaching portion of the MDUE consists of attendance and approval in four compulsory courses in the 1st and four in the 2nd semester.

Master's Degree in European Union Law:
(4 semesters, 120 ECTS)

2. Access qualifications
Students may apply for the cycle of studies leading to the master's degree - 2nd cycle (according to article 6 of the Regulation of Cycles of Studies Conducting the Degree of Master of the School of Law):

a) Holders of the degree of Law degree or legal equivalent;

b) Holders of an academic, scientific or professional curriculum that is recognized by the Scientific Council of the Law School as attesting the capacity to carry out this cycle of studies.
 
NOTICE:
The candidates referred to in point b) will only be considered after the selection of the other candidates;

For these purposes, it will be considered as certifying capacity for the accomplishment of this Master's degree to hold a degree which contains at least two curricular units in the scientific area of ??Law or related to European studies;

The recognition referred to in point (b) shall only have access to the study cycle leading to the master's degree and shall not confer on the holder the equivalence to the degree or its recognition.

Applications:

I) Submission
Applications are submitted through the Candidates area of ??the Academic Portal, specifically through the link https://alunos.uminho.pt/PT/candidatos/Mestrados// (foreign candidates can access the EN version of this page), the supporting documents must be submitted in the online application process. When the process is completed, the candidate receives an email confirming that the application has been successfully registered. The payment of the application fee is integrated into the application process itself, with the possibility of paying using a reference by ATM or credit card. The payment of the fee is mandatory so that the analysis of the submitted application and its serialization can be carried out.

II) Documents

The following documents must be submitted with the application:

a) Copy of the certificate of qualifications, with a breakdown of the courses carried out and their final classification;

b) Detailed curriculum vitae;

c) Copy of the Citizen's Card or other identification document.

NOTICE:
Applicants whose qualification certificates do not meet the specifications in (a) will not be considered;

Without prejudice to the applicable international convention, the documents mentioned in subparagraph a) must be legalized in accordance with the Code of Civil Procedure ("Authentic documents passed in a foreign country, in accordance with the law of that country, shall be legalized as long as the signature of the public official is recognized by a Portuguese diplomatic or consular agent in the respective State and the signature of this agent is authenticated with the respective white consular seal").

5. Selection criteria

The selection of applications accepted under point 2 of this notice is of the responsibility of the Course Committee, taking into account the following criteria:

a) Final grade of the degree or equivalent degree;

b) Other degrees obtained by the candidate and their respective classifications;

c) Classification, in the degree, of the curricular unit(s) of European Union law (or those referred to in the second note of point 2 of this notice);

d) Other factors of curricular valorization.

6. Disclosure of results
Based on the above criteria, the Course Committee will classify and sort the candidates and draw up a reasoned report containing the list of candidates (including alternates) and the list of candidates who were not admitted.

Once the selection process has been completed, the Course Committee publishes the placement notices in the Academic Portal.

7. Registration
Candidates admitted to the Master's degree must register through the Academic Portal within the deadline set in the call for proposals.

In the case of express withdrawal of registration, or failure to complete the respective procedure, within 3 days after the end of the registration period, the SAUM shall call the subsequent candidate(s) on the list by electronic notification sent to the mailing address indicated by the candidate for that purpose, to proceed with the registration, until the vacancies are exhausted, within the maximum period defined by the Law School.

Applicants have a period of 3 days after sending the notification to register.

Admission only takes effect for the school year referred to at the beginning of the study cycle.
