"The State of the Union" radio program (a Europe Direct do Minho partnership, Antena Minho, Correio do Minho) on EU environmental and energy policy

Researchers from UMinho intervened last week on the radio program "O Estado da União" (a Europe Direct Minho partnership, Antena Minho, Correio do Minho). In addition to the usual presence of Prof. Alessandra Silveira, holder of the Jean Monnet Chair in European Union Law at UMinho, the program was also attended by Prof. Sophie Perez (Jurist currently in the position of Member of the Court of Justice of the EU, Luxembourg), as well as Prof. Maria Cláudia Pascoal (biologist, specialist in Ecology).

Taking note of the 24th UN climate conference (COP24) in Poland on 14 December, the "State of the Union" program in November discussed the EU's environmental and energy policy, in order to clarify its growing influence in other European policies - ie the mainstreaming of environmental and energy policy in the internal market, the common agricultural policy, transport policy, industrial policy, etc. UMinho researchers concluded that the EU is turning environmental and energy risks into an opportunity for sustainable development, perhaps in the direction of the sociologist Ulrich Beck's concern: "What is good about climate change (if we survive)? climate change can save the world?"

The radio program "The State of the Union" is aired on the last Wednesday of each month and aims to discuss the current European situation, seeking to inform and elucidate the citizens on European issues relevant to their daily lives. The conversation is usually moderated by Dr. Alzira Costa, coordinator of the Europe Direct Information Center, and by Dr. Paulo Monteiro, director of the Antena Minho radio.

The program is broadcast via Antena Minho radio (106.0 FM) and can be followed through the Facebook page (https://www.facebook.com/antenaminho/videos/592374874519859/). It is also available in the Antena Minho podcast (http://www.antena-minho.pt/podcast.php?p=8703) and in the radio Youtube channel (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v = EdCDZJTvUVw).
