PARLAMENTELSIUM 4th Edition receives the campaign of voting awareness to the European elections of 2019 - Room B1 Building 2

The 4th Edition of "PARLAMENTELSIUM ? European Parliament Session's Simulation" took place on November 23rd 2018 at Room B1 of the Building 2 of the Gualtar Campus of the University of Minho. The event was promoted by ELSA-UMinho and had the support of the Communication Cabinet of the European Parliament in Portugal.

In this edition, the event had an opening ceremony dedicated to the awareness campaign "thistimeimvoting.eu", in order to sensitize European citizens to exercise their right to vote in the European elections of May 2019 and, as well, to combat the abstention that has been characteristic of those elections.

The activity had the scientific support of CEDU - JusGov.

In this 4th Edition, the discussion was about the Commission's legislative proposal to revise Regulation 45/2001, on the protection of individuals with regard to the processing of personal data by the institutions and bodies and on the free movement of such data.

This cmpetition aims to promote the understanding, by the participants, how the European Parliament's intervention in the primary legislative procedure, along with the Council, is made concerning the discussion and sedimentation of the Commission's legislative proposal. In this context, there are some European political families (redesigned by the Scientific Coordinator so the differences are more perceivable to the contestants) so discussion has to bear in mind the sensibilities those have on the subject under discussion. Applications were made by the presentation of written observations as one of those political families and both semi-final and final were conducted by drafting those political groups by each participating team.

Joana Covelo de Abreu, integrated member of CEDU-Jus-Govwas, was once again the Scientific coordinator of the activity. The following Members of the European Parliament were present in the activity: MEP Manuel dos Santos, MEP José Manuel Fernandes and MEP Marisa Matias; and the EU Law Professors, Prof. Alessandra Silveira (Jean Monnet Chair) and Prof. Pedro Froufe. The opening ceremony had the interventions of Prof. Cristina Dias, Vice-President of the Law School; Prof. Patrícia Jerónimo, Director of Jus-Gov and Mr. Pedro Valente da Silva, head of the Communication Cabinet of the European Parliament in Portugal. The activity also had the interventions of ELSA-UMinho, ELSA Portugal and AAUM's Presidents.

This activity pursues INTEROP Jean Monnet Project's goals of promoting the articulation between policy makers and academic community and the public in general in what concerns digital competences.
