Partnership Competiton Observatory / CEDU delivered a colective action at Lisbon's Court against Sport TV for breach of competition law

The Competition Observatory (CO) - a non-profit organization, established in Lisbon in November 2014 in which CEDU participates, through its research line also entitled "Centre for Competition / CEDU" - delivered in Lisbon's Court a colective action against Sport TV for anticompetitive practices.

The association claims that the sports channel took its market power in the relevant market to raise prices for consumers. It is intended, now and through this colective action promoted by CO, to get a compensation for damages resulting from the breach of competition law for consumers. "This action will have two parts. Firstly, the court declaring a breach of competition rules and the obligation to compensate victims and, second, if the action is successful, to make quantification of the damage", said Professor Eduardo Paz Ferreira, Observatory for Competition's President.

The period referred to in the colective action is between 1 January 2005 to 30 June 2013. The Lisbon Court of Appeal upheld the conviction ratio of Sport TV for abuse of dominant position, fining the company at 2.7 million euros.
