III Forum on Child Abuse (European Perspective)

In partnership with Associação Projeto Criar - a renown association for the protection of domestic violence victims and children who are victims of child abuse - on 21st March 2014 CEDU organized the III Forum on Child Abuse (European Perspective).

Having as a motto the 2011/92 directive (on combating the sexual abuse and exploitation of children and child pornography), whose deadline for transposition expired on 18 December 2013, this interdisciplinary meeting intended to constitute a forum of reflection and dialogue around the many issues associated with the problem of sexual abuse of children.

Taking into consideration recent studies showing that the judicial action can and should have a moderating effect of the negative impact suffered by the child, this Forum intended to find out whether the regulatory solutions which guide the judicial process functioning within the Union are or are not adapted to the needs of victims of sexual abuse, in order to stabilize their legitimate expectations.

Association Project CRIAR provides legal and social assistance to women, children, youth and families who are victims, particularly when they are victims of sexual abuse, maltreatment, domestic violence and trafficking in human beings and helping to promote an intervention in network for the resolution of such situations.

The initiative was attended by the President of the National Commission on Children and Youth at Risk (CNCJR), Judge Advisor Emeritus Armando Leandro, besides the intervention of judges and prosecutors - among which the Supreme Court Judge, Judge Maria Clara Sottomayor - as well as lawyers, psychologists, academics and researchers. The initiative received strong support from professionals who work with children victims, was attended by over 150 participants.
